Jewellery Care Guide

How to keep your Sanluxury pieces looking their best.

Sanluxury jewellery is made to be worn and loved. A little care, every day, keeps each piece bright and beautiful for far longer. Please take a few minutes to read this guide before wearing your jewellery.

At a glance

Do

  • Put your jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and hair products.
  • Wipe each piece with a soft, dry cloth after wearing.
  • Dry it straight away if it gets wet.
  • Store each piece on its own in its Sanluxury pouch or box.
  • Take it off for the gym, swimming, cleaning and sleep.

Avoid

  • Perfume, lotion, sunscreen, hairspray and hand sanitiser on the metal.
  • Pools, spas, the sea and long, hot showers.
  • Bleach, household cleaners and jewellery dips.
  • Abrasive cloths, brushes, toothpaste and ultrasonic cleaners.
  • Bending, pulling or forcing clasps, chains and adjustable bands.

Understanding your jewellery

How a piece should be cared for depends on what it is made from. Choose your material below. You will find it listed under Design details on each product page.

Stainless steel

Our stainless steel pieces are 18K PVD Gold Plated. PVD is a modern plating method that bonds the gold finish to the steel, which makes it far harder wearing than traditional plating.

They are water resistant and anti-tarnish, and are made without nickel or lead. It is plated jewellery, not solid gold, and like every plated finish it will gradually change with time and wear. How quickly depends on how often a piece is worn, how it is cared for, and your own skin chemistry.

  • The most durable of our materials and the best choice for everyday wear.
  • Dry it after contact with water and keep it away from chemicals to protect the finish.
  • Clean with a soft, dry cloth. Never use polish or abrasive cloths on a plated finish.

Brass

Brass is a warm, golden alloy of copper and zinc, usually finished with a layer of gold plating. It is a softer, more reactive metal than stainless steel and needs a little more care.

Brass jewellery is not water resistant. Over time the plating wears and the brass beneath reacts naturally with air, moisture and skin, which can darken the metal. This is a normal characteristic of brass and not a fault.

  • Keep it dry. Remove it before washing your hands, showering, swimming and exercise.
  • Where the metal meets moisture or skin acidity it may leave a temporary dark or green mark on the skin. This is harmless and washes off.
  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth after every wear and store in a sealed pouch, away from humidity.
  • Do not use metal polish or polishing cloths on plated brass, as they remove the plating.

Sterling silver

Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, marked 925. It is a precious metal with a soft, bright lustre, and it is softer than stainless steel, so it can scratch or bend more easily.

Silver tarnishes naturally as it reacts with air and moisture, becoming darker or duller over time. Tarnish is not a fault and can be cleaned away.

  • Wearing silver often helps slow tarnish. Leaving it out in the open air speeds it up.
  • Remove it before swimming, bathing, hot springs and cleaning. Chlorine, salt water and sulphur darken silver quickly.
  • Store in a sealed pouch or anti-tarnish bag, away from humidity.
  • Plain sterling silver can be restored with a silver polishing cloth. Never use liquid silver dips on pieces set with stones or pearls.
  • Gold plated silver should only be wiped with a soft, dry cloth. Polishing removes the plating.

Small differences in colour, stone placement and finish between pieces, and between a piece and its photograph, are a natural part of how jewellery is made and are not faults.

Everyday wear

Jewellery should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.

  • Put it on after dressing and after perfume, moisturiser, sunscreen, make-up and hair products have dried.
  • Take it off before exercise, sport, heavy lifting, gardening and housework.
  • Take it off before bed. Chains can kink or snap and stones can loosen while you sleep.
  • Take rings off before washing your hands with soap or using hand sanitiser.

Water and moisture

Our stainless steel jewellery is water resistant. Brief contact with clean water, such as rain or a quick rinse, will not harm it if it is dried soon afterwards. Regular or prolonged exposure will shorten the life of the finish. Brass and sterling silver pieces should be kept dry.

  • Remove jewellery before swimming. Chlorine and salt water are especially harsh on plating.
  • Remove it before spas, saunas and steam rooms. Heat and moisture together speed up wear.
  • We recommend removing it before showering or bathing. Soap, shampoo and hot water leave a film that dulls the shine.
  • If a piece gets wet, pat it dry with a soft cloth and let it air dry fully before storing.

Chemicals and cosmetics

Chemicals are the most common cause of discolouration and fading. Keep your jewellery away from:

  • Perfume, body sprays, lotions, oils, sunscreen, fake tan and insect repellent.
  • Hairspray, hair dye and styling products.
  • Hand sanitiser, soap and detergents.
  • Bleach, chlorine and household cleaning products.

If a piece comes into contact with any of these, wipe it clean with a soft, dry cloth as soon as you can.

Cleaning

  • After each wear, wipe gently with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove oils and moisture.
  • For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild, fragrance-free soap, rinse quickly, and pat completely dry.
  • Never rub hard. Light, gentle strokes are enough.

Do not use jewellery dips, silver or gold polish, polishing cloths treated with chemicals, toothpaste, baking soda, brushes, or ultrasonic and steam cleaners. These can strip the plating and loosen stones.

Storage

  • Keep each piece on its own in its Sanluxury pouch or box so pieces cannot scratch each other.
  • Fasten clasps and lay chains flat to prevent tangling and kinks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.
  • Do not store jewellery in the bathroom, where humidity is high.
  • When travelling, pack each piece separately in a pouch or travel case.

Stones, pearls and delicate details

Crystals, zircon stones, pearls and pearl-effect details are more delicate than the metal around them.

  • Avoid knocks and pressure, which can chip stones or loosen their settings.
  • Keep stones and pearls away from water, heat and chemicals, which can cloud them or weaken the setting.
  • Do not pull on chains, charms or pendants, and check clasps are fully closed before wearing.
  • If a stone or fitting feels loose, stop wearing the piece and get in touch with us.

Adjustable rings, bangles and extender chains

Adjustable pieces are designed to be shaped gently, a small amount, a small number of times.

  • Adjust slowly and evenly, close to the opening, rather than bending the whole band.
  • Do not adjust a piece every time you wear it. Repeated bending weakens the metal and may cause it to lose its shape or break.
  • Open bangles by easing them on at the narrowest part of the wrist rather than pulling the opening apart.

Skin sensitivity and safety

Our jewellery is hypoallergenic and made without nickel or lead, and is suitable for most people with sensitive skin. Skin reacts differently from person to person, so we cannot guarantee that a piece will suit everyone.

  • If you notice redness, itching or irritation, stop wearing the piece. Seek medical advice if it continues.
  • Do not wear jewellery over broken or irritated skin, or in new piercings that have not healed.
  • Our jewellery contains small parts and is not a toy. Keep it out of reach of young children, and never leave a child unattended with jewellery.

What is normal wear

With time and use, all plated jewellery shows signs of wear. The following are expected and are not manufacturing faults:

  • Gradual softening or fading of the gold colour, especially where a piece rubs against skin or clothing.
  • Fine surface scratches and scuffs from everyday use.
  • Changes caused by water, sweat, perfume, cosmetics, chemicals or humidity.
  • Bending, stretching or breakage caused by pulling, pressure, impact or over-adjusting.
  • Tangled, kinked or knotted chains.
  • Loss of a piece, or of a stone or part, after accidental damage.
